 Attention: This is your new blog assignment. To post your paragraphs, just like before, click on the comment link below this post. As always, keep it clean and academic. Please notice there are two parts to this assignment.

Please pay close attention to the following directions (you may want to print them):

For this blog, you will be analyzing visual rhetoric. I will begin the blog with a visual that I will post. The first person to post after I have submitted the visual will analyze the visual with the following guidelines and then post their own image:

Your post will have three parts: (don’t forget to put the title of the image you are analyzing in the subject of your post)

·        Using your analysis sheets that were given in class, break down the visual and describe at least 3 strategies (Object, Lighting, Angle, Body language, Linguistic Features, etc.)   used by the artist, photographer, or cartoonist.  For every strategy, list the effect.

For example:  The artist juxtaposes the images from the window with those seen on the T.V. (strategy) in order to capitalize on the contrast between nature and technology.

·        Next, using the rhetorical frame work, list the following: Exigence, Audience, and Purpose. List the appeals used as well: Ethos, Logos, Pathos.

·        Finally, make a cogent statement about what argument/message the artist, photographer, or cartoonist is making.

After you have published your analysis of the visual that was last posted, you must find a visual and immediately post it to the blog so the next person can begin their analysis.  ******Find your visual before you begin your analysis. Post it immediately after your analysis. Include your name, a link to the image, and the title of the image.  Failure to post an image will result in a zero on the blog assignment. You may only analyze the image you find when you log into the blog. You may not choose another image. You may post an advertisement, a piece of art, a photograph, or a political cartoon.     In this image the artist uses the huge size of the eagle with Wall Street on it in order to demonstrate the fact that Wall Street is preying on the poor innocent people below. Wall Street is painted as something big and large to show that we should fear it.

    The artist also uses color to further illustrate the point that Wall Street is seen as the devil so to speak. The eagle is in black and white while the bottom half of the picture has color to it.

    The author uses the use of angle in order to show that Wall Street is devouring the hard working people that are working for minimum wage and not getting fair treatment.

    The exigence is the amount of unsatisfied people that are either jobless, or even if they have jobs they are not making enough to support their families.

    The audience might be the people in Wall Street so they can see how they are being perceived.

    The purpose of this is to demonstrate the ill treatment that middle class workers have been enduring and to demonstrate their disapproval.
    The author does not use ethos or logos but mostly relies on pathos in order to get an audience that sympathizes with the mistreated or unemployed workers.

    The cartoonist is trying to demonstrate the negative effects of the work being done in Wall Street.

  4. Visual Rhetoric
    In this image, the cartoonist utilizes the object of the cell phones of both of the characters who seem utterly distracted from what is going on. It can be seen that the driver who is texting is distracted from the wheel (as his eyes are veered off onto his buzzing phone) while Death is depicted not doing his job, but rather, replying back to the driver who is soon to get into a collision with the car in front of him. These objects show how texting while driving is distracting to not only the driver, but also people who should be doing something else (in this case death)

    The body language also depicts how distraction texting and driving is. Considering that The Grim Reaper is shown holding his scythe at his shoulder and not his hand, it shows how distracting texting can be and thus supporting the idea that texting is not acceptable when doing other jobs as well.

    Lastly, the angle of the cartoon shows how distracted drivers can totally miss what is about to happen to them. In this case, the driver is so distracted that he can not see the incoming car heading his way.

    The probable exigence of this cartoon is most likely the amount of laws that are being passed out that are prohibiting texting while driving. The intended audience is obviously anyone who drives and the main purpose of this cartoon is to convince people that texting while driving is not the smartest thing to do because it can get you killed. It is almost like playing with death. The two main appeals shown in this cartoon are pathos and ethos. The emotions are of sadness and regret (shown through death texting the unknowing driver's fate) and ethos through choosing not to text while driving.

    This cartoonist is trying to convince all who drive to stop texting while driving. If one can do so, it will save not only your life, but others' lives too.

    In this picture, the cartoonist uses men with weapons as the hall monitors and labels the rooms with a subject then says bunker after it which is some sort of container that holds fuel. All the men with weapons are hiddding behind bags but one of them has a microphone screaming at the boy asking where his hall pass is and the boy is holding it straight up in his hands and has a really scared look on his face.

    The millitary setting with all the machine guns and armed men inside a school shows that the wars or similar problems are being brought into civilized areas where there are innocent people that are really scared and are just trying to go on with their normal lives. It could be meant to tell people that we should keep these things away from innocent people who shouldnt get hurt or be at the risk of getting hurt or that we should just stop fighting altogether.

    The angle of the picture is just straight down the hallway but the child is centered right in the middle so that he is the main object of the whole picture and he is the one with a really scared look on his face because he is being helld up to gun point when he is doing nothing wrong hes just trying to get to his class and go on with his normal day.


    The position of the lockers are set right behind the kid down the hall way so that you know for sure it is a school and the same thing with the signs above each door with a subject on it but "bunker" after it showing that the wars are being brought to far into civilization that we have to work with it or around it because we have no say in what to do we are just being told what to do and there is nothing we can do about it.

    I think this cartoon could have two different meanings . the first being that the wars/similar problems are being brought too far into civilization that we are being forced to deal with it because we are being told what to do and also the innocent people are scared of being hurt\killed for not listening. the second one would be that maybe some students feel like they are constantly being controlled by people at school and getting in trouble for pointless things when they are doing nothing wrong so they feel that they will get hurt for making just one wrong move.

    In this political cartoon the artist portrays america as being a very easy place for almost anyone to access guns, which leads to the viewer feeling the emotional appeal because every time a tragedy happens and is related back to guns it is a sad thing for everyone because once again we let these weapons end up in the wrong hands. This picture also has a tone of seriousness as well as a sarcasm to it because we sell guns to people like a toy store sells to kids. There is not much structure or requirements for a civilian to purchase a gun and that how these "crazies" end up with them

  9. Guns R Us
    In this imagine, illustrated by Bill Day, tries to imply the issue on gun control that's been a heated debate in the last few months. The illustrator portrays the theme of the illustration by adding a sense of comical and something important at the same time. The title of the picture has similarities between "Toys R Us" which makes it seem very comical. Additionally, the smiley face in the very bottom of the picture helps ease the heated topic.

    Also, the written text, "Stand your ground" signifies the nationalism of America and furthermore the supporters for the use of automatic weapons.

    The whole drawing of the country almost simulates a industry-looking, perhaps signifying more of a easy control over power than sympathetic power.

    In this political cartoon Gary McCoy uses body langauge to show how lay back and almost teacher like. in this image Obama is seen as a mother figure taking away the soldiers guns.

    Also the size in which McCoy uses to draw the mens ears dipcit a feeling of inocentes and immaturity. I believe Gary uses this to give this drawing more of a satirical feeling.

    McCoy uses obejects such as the use of guns to show how easily Obama can be persauded to make rash descions.

  12. Welcome to nowhere by BMW

    In this picture the front object is a BMW all alone in the middle of nowhere. We know this because of the big sign above it saying "Welcome to the middle of nowhere" and the caption under it says "Get there." by using these captions and objects you can infer that if you use BMW cars you can get anywhere starting even from the middle of nowhere and look good while doing it.

    In this political cartoon the artist portrays america and the debt we are in, and how it just keeps growing more and more! Rather than any other animal the artist also drew a pig rather than another animal because people think of pigs as greedy and dumb and unaware of what they are doing. The artist uses a logical approach by having the two guys on the side questioning about what they should do to expand the "debt roof." The government doesn't know what to do about the debt and this image helps show the struggle they have with the country debt.
